Use a leash on your dog inside your home

The reason we keep a leash on our dogs outside on a walk is so you have control over what your can and cannot do. Sounds easy enough right? As a professional dog trainer for 15 years, almost every time I go to a new clients home of mine and they answer the door to let me in their dog is off leash and jumps on me, gets over excited, runs out the door, play bites me, barks at me, runs away from me, grabs something to chew on and the list goes on. The humans then apologize, talk to the dog saying things that the dog does not understand so the dog cannot listen, yell at the dog and the dog still does not listen, chase after the dog and the dog runs away, or do nothing at all.

So what can you do?

Keeping the leash attached to your dog inside your home at certain times allows you to show your dog how to behave in different situations, the same reason you keep the leash on your dog on a walk. Your dog will not listen without the leash outside and your dog does not listen without the leash inside either (until he or she is trained). Something as simple as attaching the leash to your dog before letting someone into your home stops the jumping, play biting, over excitement, chewing, barking and whatever else your dog does at that time.

But my dog will chew the leash?

Most dogs will chew the leash if left on them. So what can you do if that happens with your dog? They make chew proof leashes that you can order from amazon and they also make a short chew proof tab leash which is a very short leash that is made to use in those situations which you can also order from amazon.

Be consistent as you can using a leash on your dog if your dog jumps on everyone you let in your home and you will start to see a big change in their behavior.
